Lovaas Projects is pleased to announce New Address, a solo show by Tobias Kaspar. The exhibition inaugurates LOVAAS, a new gallery space for contemporary art in Munich.

New Address is organized around the idea of residential mobility. Kaspar teases out the contrary psychological phenomena of familiarity-liking and the adventure-seeking, experienced by people modern day nomads. Travelers and the uprooted recognize the preference for familiar objects and experiences, while geographical unhinging from the past also releases greater openness towards adventure. Kaspar’s installation feels like a half-furnished new apartment housed within the memory of an old space. The show plays with the temporal security of a shared pop culture by employing quotes and design imprints from lifestyle magazines, and the use of deconstructed fashion trends. At the same time, Kaspar challenges this pop culture familiarity with the robust abstraction of the Reflector Paintings thus completing a visual representation of the inherent tension of residential mobility.

Tobias Kaspar, a Swiss artist currently based in Riga has exhibited widely, including solo museum shows and special projects at Cinecittà/Istituto Svizzero, Rome (2016); Kunsthalle St. Gallen (2014), and Midway Contemporary Art, Minneapolis (2013). His work was in numerous group exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw (2016); Art Basel Parcours (2015); Wattis Institute for Contemporary Art, San Francisco (2015); Kunsthalle Wien (2014); Artists Space, New York (2013); Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2012); Kunsthalle Zurich (2011).
